EJ&T: Exodus 22:27-23:5: Don't revile the gods, eat carrion, or favor the poor

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. Don't revile the gods.
  2. Thou shalt not revile the gods. Exodus 22:28a

  3. Don't curse the ruler of your people.
  4. Nor curse the ruler of thy people. Exodus 22:28b

    Curse not the king, no not in thy thought. Ecclesiastes 10:20

    Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people. Acts 23:5

  5. Be prompt in giving God your first ripe fruits and liquor.
  6. Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors. Exodus 22:29a

    The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Exodus 34:26

    To bring the firstfruits of our ground, and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, unto the house of the LORD. Nehemiah 10:35

    And that we should bring the firstfruits of our dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God. Nehemiah 10:37

    Honour the LORD ... with the firstfruits of all thine increase. Proverbs 3:9

  7. Be holy.
  8. Ye shall be holy men unto me. Exodus 22:31a

    I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy. ... Ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. Leviticus 11:44-45

    Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy. Leviticus 19:2

    Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy. Leviticus 20:7

    Ye shall be holy unto me. Leviticus 20:26

    Sanctify now yourselves.... 2 Chronicles 29:5

    God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. 1 Thessalonians 4:7

    Follow ... holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14

    Be ye holy; for I am holy. 1 Peter 1:16

  9. Don't eat any animal that died of natural causes or was killed by other animals. Feed it to the dogs.
  10. Neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. Exodus 22:31b

    And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and the fat of that which is torn with beasts, may be used in any other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it. Leviticus 7:24

    And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even. And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. Leviticus 11:39-40

    That which dieth of itself, or is torn with beasts, he shall not eat to defile himself therewith. Leviticus 22:8

  11. Don't provide favorable testimony for a guilty person.
  12. Put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. Exodus 23:1b

  13. Don't do evil just because everyone else is.
  14. Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil. Exodus 23:2a

    If sinners entice thee, consent thou not. Proverbs 1:10

    Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. Proverbs 4:14-15

  15. Don't pervert justice by the wrongly following the majority.
  16. Neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment. Exodus 23:2b

  17. Don't favor poor people in lawsuits.
  18. Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause. Exodus 23:3

    Do not show favoritism to a poor person in a lawsuit. NIV

  19. Return your enemy's ox or ass if it goes astray.
  20. If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. Exodus 23:4

  21. If your enemy's ass falls down, help with it.
  22. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. Exodus 23:5
